UMS 'n JIP is a Swiss duo for new music .

history

With over 1000 appearances since 2007, UMS 'n JIP is one of the world's most active ensembles for new music. They are characterized by multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity as well as an international network of composers, directors, visual artists, authors, programmers and researchers with whom they regularly work. They appear in concert, scenic, performative, installation and multimedia form and work aesthetically at the interface between European and non-European music and between musical avant-garde and pop.

Ulrike Mayer-Spohn (UMS) and Javier Hagen (JIP) both have classical music (Dorothea Winter and Mike Svoboda or Roland Hermann and Nicolai Gedda ), composition ( Erik Oña , Wolfgang Rihm , Heiner Goebbels ) and audio design (studio for electronic music Basel) studied in Holland (The Hague), Germany (Karlsruhe), Italy (Ferrara) and Switzerland (Basel, Zurich). Both solo and as a duo they have performed in most European countries, the USA, Latin America, Australia, Russia, North Africa and the Far East, where they have performed a total of over 300 works in collaboration with composers such as Péter Eötvös , Aribert Reimann , Mauricio Kagel , Huang Ruo , Guo Wenjing , Stefano Gervasoni , Xavier Dayer, Vladimir Gorlinsky (original) performed and recorded for international radio and television companies.

Her own compositions, including ensemble, orchestral, choral and scenic works with and without electronics, won prizes at the Weimar Spring Days for Contemporary Music (2017), at the International Music Festival in Savona (2017), at the London Ear Festival (2016) , at the Musikfestival Bern (2011), at Culturescapes (2010), in Treviso (2011), at the Music Village Mount Pelion (2011) and were performed by the ensembles l'Arsenale, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart , Uroboros Ensemble, zafraan Berlin, CeproMusic Ensamble Mexico , Ensemble Proton Bern , Basler Madrigalisten , Putni, dissonArt Ensemble, Taller Sonoro, Ensemble Nuove Musiche, Ensemble Via Nova, Ensemble Phoenix , Männerstimmen Basel , Amar Quartet under the direction of Beat Furrer , Tsung Yeh, Mark Foster, Jose Luis Castillo, Fabián Panisello , Jürg Henneberger, Oliver Rudin , Titus Engel and Filippo Perocco.

JIP is also the current President of the Swiss Society for New Music , Director of the Festival for New Music Forum Wallis, sits on the Academic Council of the Academy for Contemporary Opera at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and was a member of the UNESCO ICH Commission from 2009-18 (Intangible Cultural Heritage) of the Canton of Valais in Switzerland.

Surname

The name of the ensemble is derived from the initials of the birth names of both performers: Ulrike Mayer-Spohn (UMS) and Javier-Ignacio Palau-Ribes (JIP), now Javier Hagen.
