Culturescapes ( spelling : CULTURESCAPES ) is a culture festival that takes place every autumn in Switzerland, with a focus on Basel , in which the cultural landscape of another country or region is presented. Founded in 2002, mainly Eastern European countries were presented. Steps have been taken in recent years with issues devoted to Turkey , Azerbaijan , the People's Republic of China and Israel . With Moscow 2012, Culturescapes put the cultural topography of a city in the focus of the festival for the first time. The Balkan 2013 edition not only highlighted a country, but an entire cultural region. In 2015 the island nation of Iceland was presented. At the same time it was also announced that the festival will in future take place at the biennale rhythm. The next edition will take place in 2017. The festival cooperates with existing cultural institutions such as the Theater Basel , the Kaserne Basel or the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee , but also with the official representatives of Switzerland, e. B. pro Helvetia , as well as the respective host country at government level. The festival is multifaceted, in addition to performing arts such as music , theater and dance , film , visual arts , handcraft , literature and new media are also presented. In the Focus section, in cooperation with Swiss educational institutions such as the University of Basel or the University of Zurich, contemporary issues, popular culture and the history of the respective focus region are discussed and discussed. Controversial topics are not left out, so that protests and disputes have already occurred several times when, for example, the Armenian genocide or aspects of the Middle East conflict were discussed or Azerbaijani regime critics had their say. The founder and curator of all previous editions is the Dutch cultural entrepreneur Jurriaan Cooiman .

Idea and perspective

The original idea of Culturescapes was to trace processes of transformation and their expression in contemporary art in the then almost unknown countries of the former Eastern Bloc. Little by little, this relationship dissolved and something new came into focus: “Cultural landscapes” with a long tradition of artistic diversity, the current form of which is shaped by a special constellation of historical, political, social and economic areas of tension.

Return legs

Starting with the Azerbaijan edition, there were more and more return matches in which Swiss artists performed in the respective focus country. Current Swiss art was shown in 2013 in the eight countries of the Western Balkans under the name “Swiss Culturescapes” . Among others the Knabenkantorei Basel , the musician Nik Bärtsch with his project "Ronin" or "Imitation of life" by Boris Nikitin. Christoph Marthaler's “King Size” was received with great enthusiasm at the International Theater Festival, Sarajevo (MESS) and at the World Theater Festival in Zagreb.

Feedback and criticism

The issue of Armenia resulted in various disputes up to the highest political level over the thematization of the Armenian genocide. Other editions were also controversial because of individual issues relating to the host country: for example, critical articles in the festival newspaper in the Turkey edition, as well as the feature film “Gitmek”, freedom of speech and press at the Azerbaijan Festival and, as could be expected, in Israel Palestinian question, numerous actors in Switzerland campaigned for a complete cultural boycott against Israel.

Sponsorship and patronage

Culturescapes was operated in the early years as a label of the PASS (Performing Art ServiceS, Basel) association, but has been operating as an independent foundation Culturescapes since 2009. President is Pius Knüsel, director Jurriaan Cooiman. The state presidents of the respective host countries together with a Swiss Federal Council often took over the patronage . 2008 Abdullah Gül , Turkish President and Pascal Couchepin , 2010 Hu Jintao President of the People's Republic of China and Doris Leuthard , 2011 Micheline Calmy-Rey . The composer Sofia Gubaidulina , the philosopher Hans Saner (1934-2017) as well as the Basel government councilor Guy Morin and the writer Iso Camartin are or were also part of the patronage.
