The USS Minnesota (SSN-783) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy . It belongs to the Virginia class and was named after the US state of Minnesota .
Surname
SSN-783 was named after the US state of Minnesota. The last submarine with the same name was decommissioned in 1921 . The submarine USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul , which bears a similar name, was decommissioned in 2008. There was also a battleship ( USS Minnesota (BB-22) ), a frigate ( USS Minnesota (1855) ), and a cargo ship ( SS Minnesotan ) with this name.
history
SSN-783 was commissioned in 2004 and in May 2011 at Newport News Shipbuilding on down Kiel . The launch took place in late 2012. On September 7, 2013, the Minnesota was put into service (11 months ahead of schedule) and stationed in Groton .
