history

Downfall

On May 8, 1945 at 4:45 am, a British flying boat of the type Catalina "X" (Flt Lt KM Murray) of the 210th RAF Squadron discovered the submerged submarine. The snorkel and periscope had given it away. Four depth charges were dropped, floated after which oil. The detached sonar buoys made hammering sounds as if the crew were trying to repair the boat. When the flying boat broke off observation at 2:10 p.m. due to lack of fuel, the hammering could still be heard. After two days, on May 10, 1945, Commander Heinz Emmrich brought his damaged boat to the surface so that the crew could leave it. The boat was then blown up by the crew. 61 ° 32 '  N , 1 ° 53'  E
