U 351 was a German submarine from the Type VII C , a so-called because of its possibilities "Atlantic Boat". It was used by the Kriegsmarine during the Second World War in the Baltic Sea for the training and instruction of officers and men.
Technical specifications
U 351 was built by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft , which built 20 boats of the VII for the navy by 1944. Five boats of this class were built in 1941. A VII C-boat was 67.1 m long and had a draft of 4.8 m. It was propelled by two diesel engines when sailing above water, which ensured a top speed of 17 knots . The electric motors used for underwater travel achieved a speed of 7.6 kn. U 351 wore a mermaid on the tower and, probably referring to the place of birth of the temporary commander Rosenberg, the Hamburg coat of arms and the crew mark of his officer's class , the Olympic rings.
commitment
U 351 was used exclusively by the naval training associations stationed in Stettin , Memel , Pillau and Gotenhafen and did not complete any operations.
Sinking
Although Karl Dönitz , Commander in Chief of the Navy and Commander of the U-Boats , had withdrawn the rainbow order to sink the German U-Boats on May 4, 1945, many commanders decided to sink their boats themselves anyway . U 351 was sunk in Hörup Haff in southern Denmark , lifted in 1948 and then scrapped.
