U 291 was a German Type VII C training submarine, which was used in the Baltic Sea during World War II to train and train new submarine men and to try out new technologies.
history
The U 291 was commissioned from the Vegesack shipyard on June 5, 1941 as the last boat in the U 251 to U 291 series . The keel laying under the temporary designation "Neubau 056" began on October 17, 1942, the launch took place on June 30, 1943. The commissioning under Oberleutnant zur See Hans Keerl, former watch officer on U 598 , finally took place on August 4, 1943. The sponsorship of U 291 was taken over by Wiesbaden , which took over part of the construction costs of the boat. At the commissioning ceremony, some representatives presented Wiesbaden Lieutenant Keerl with the city arms, which he immediately had attached to the front of the tower.
Whereabouts
After its surrender in Cuxhaven, U 291 was first to Wilhelmshaven and later to Loch Ryan, where it waited to be scuttled during Operation Deadlight . On December 21, 1945, the boat was brought to the sinking position by the Polish destroyer OPR Krakowiak (L.115) , but sunk by the heavy artillery of the British destroyer HMS Onslaught because of the broken towing connection . The wreck is located at 55 ° 50.30 'N - 09 ° 08' W in the former naval grid square AM 5259.
