U 292 was a German type VII C / 41 submarine that was used by the Navy in the submarine warfare of World War II in the Arctic Ocean .

Technical specifications

The Vegesacker shipyard , a subsidiary of Bremer Vulkan , delivered a total of 18 type VII C / 41 boats to the Navy in 1943 and 1944. This type was a further development of the often built Type VII C and U 292 was the first boat of the new type that was built at this shipyard. a submarine of this type was 67.2 m long and displaced 860 m³ under water - a little less than the previous type. Further differences existed in the artillery armament, which included a 3.7 cm flak and four 2.0 cm flak but no cannon (as standard with VII C). U 292 wore two crossed brooms as a boat coat of arms .

commander

Werner Schmidt was born on July 11, 1920 in the Friedrichsort district of Kiel and joined the Navy in 1939. Following his submarine training, which he completed in February 1942, he made four patrols on the U 84 as an officer on watch . In the summer of 1943, Werner Schmidt completed his submarine command training and took over command of the U 292 at the end of August . On October 1, 1943 he was promoted to first lieutenant at sea.

Commitment and history

Lieutenant Schmidt put U 292 into service on August 25, 1943. Until March 30 of the following year, he undertook several training trips in the Baltic Sea to train the crew. During this time U 292 belonged to the 8th U-Flotilla , a training flotilla , and was stationed in Danzig . On May 1, 1944, the boat was assigned to the 1st U-Flotilla . U 292 left Kiel on May 6 and reached Larvik in Norway after two days . From here it drove to Bergen , which it reached on May 22nd.

Sinking

U 292 left Bergen on May 24th. On May 27, the boat was discovered and sunk by the Canadian pilot of a British Liberator bomber .
