U 335 was a so-called "Atlantic" submarine of the type VII C of the Kriegsmarine in World War II .

The boat

It was on 15 August 1940 together with U 336 , with the North Sea works in Emden commissioned and on January 3, 1941, entitled "New 207" set to Kiel . The launch took place on October 15, 1941 and the commissioning under Lieutenant Captain Hans-Hermann Pelkner took place on December 17, 1941. As a tower emblem, the boat had a white cross on a black sign on the port side of the tower.

history

The boat left Kiel on July 30, 1942 and moved to Kristiansand , from where it left for good on August 1.

On the evening of August 3, 1942, the officer on watch of the British submarine HMS Saracen sighted a shadow 2,700 meters away, which was identified as a German submarine. Just three minutes later, six torpedoes ran towards the German submarine. Two minutes later, a high column of water rose behind the tower and the boat disappeared after the explosion. HMS Saracen immediately ran to the sinking site to pick up survivors, but only three men could be found in the water. One drowned shortly before he was saved, one was already dead. Only the radio operator, Rudolf Jahnke, could be saved alive.

The wreck is located in the former naval grid square AF 7294 at position 62 ° 48 'N - 00 ° 12' W.
