Construction and commissioning

The order for the boat was placed on June 5, 1941 at the Vegesacker shipyard in Bremen . The keel was laid on June 2, 1942, the launch on February 3, 1943, the commissioning under Oberleutnant zur See Rudolf Müller finally took place on March 13, 1943.

Sinking

On 29 October 1943, U 282 south-east of Greenland on convoy escort ON.208 from the backup Escorts Group B.7 by depth charges of the British destroyer HMS Vidette , HMS Duncan and the Corvette HMS Sunflower in position 55 ° 28 '  N , 31 ° 57 ′  W sunk.

Vidette recorded with ASDIC location the submarine, which was sunk after a long hunt by Hedgehog water bombs from the Sunflower . All 48 crew members were killed. The boat was identified on the basis of floating wreckage and pieces of clothing.
