history

The boat was built under construction number 17 at the Vegesacker shipyard in Bremen. The construction contract was dated September 23, 1939, the keel was laid on November 1, 1940. Launched on August 14, 1941, commissioned on October 4, 1941 under Lieutenant Günter Schiebusch as a training boat of the 6th U-Flotilla . On December 21, 1941, Kapitänleutnant Kai Lerchen took over the boat, which still belonged to the 6th U-Flotilla in Danzig and was declared a front boat on April 1, 1942. The flotilla had moved to St. Nazaire in February 1942 under the command of the flotilla, Kapitänleutnant Fritz Frauenheim.

The first and only patrol began on March 26, 1942 and led via Heligoland (March 28, 1942) to Iceland , where agents were dropped on April 8, 1942 .

On April 14, 1942, the submarine encountered convoy OG 82 , which was secured by the escort group under Commanding Officer Frederic John Walker . The submarine was with the new radar tracked Type 271 already at long range and could one torpedo compartments on the corvette HMS Vetch shoot, which could, however, dodge the escort ship. Then the submarine was sunk by artillery and depth charges ( Lage ). All 44 men on board were killed.
