Sebastian Rüger and Frank Smilgies met in 1990 while studying acting at the Folkwang University in Essen . After initially having separate careers at various German theaters, they founded Ulan & Bator in 2001 .
Until the first full-length program Verrklichkeit , which premiered on October 24, 2007, the two only played mix shows and appeared in comedy programs such as the Quatsch Comedy Club , Nightwash and Sarah Kuttner , and at the Arosa Humor Festival . They also worked on the radio in comedy formats on 1Live ( COP - Cops without a plan , Zappokalypse , What would if ... etc.) and WDR 2 ( encore ).
On October 27, 2014 Ulan & Bator performed the new program Irreparable in the Comedia in Cologne . In this they continued to develop their style of play from Wirrklichkeit continued compacting brought simultaneously by issues such as neoliberalism , civil control , exploitation and other political topics a different quality in her absurdly comical cabaret - theater .
On March 27, 2018, they were featured on arms exports in the ZDF program Die Anstalt .
style
According to their own statements, Ulan & Bator operate “theater in the form of jazz with the expression of comedy” in a kind of cut-up system. In doing so, they let their various influences from spoken theater, television and pop culture , skits , comedy , music and dance work side by side in a "free-floating association madness of the West". Except for a few arrangements at the beginning and end of the evening and a certain pre-selection of elements, the course of reality is improvised; sometimes new scenes and moments arise, for example when reacting to the audience .
Ulan & Bator combine elements from theater , music , comedy , dance , improvisation and puns in their performances . The trademark of Ulan & Bator are two bobble hats , which allow those who wear them to enter the realm of fantasy and wild associations on stage.
Ulan & Bator really only use two chairs as props . In addition, apart from a change of light at the end, they do without staging tricks such as sound recordings or projections .
