Stenlund won both the Swedish junior title and the national Swedish championship title in 1985. The following year he became a professional tennis player and was named Newcomer of the Year by the ATP . In the same year he won his only individual title on the ATP World Tour in Palermo . He was also in the semi-finals of Bordeaux and Stuttgart . In 1987 he was in the semi-finals of Bari , Geneva and the Monte Carlo Masters . In Bari he won his only tournament win in doubles alongside his compatriot Christer Allgårdh . In the following years he was unable to build on these successes. He suffered series of first round defeats. In the 1990s he played on the ATP Challenger Tour and satellite tournaments. His last success was in 1993, when he qualified for the Monte Carlo Masters through victories over Leander Paes, among others , and defeated Diego Nargiso and Guy Forget in the main draw , before losing to Jonas Svensson in straight sets in the second round . He reached his highest ranking in the ATP world rankings in 1987 with position 23 in singles and 229 in doubles.
His best result in a Grand Slam tournament was in 1986 when he played singles at the French Open and doubles at the US Open .
