Ulises Aurelio Casiano Vargas

Ulises Aurelio Casiano Vargas (born September 25, 1933 in Lajas ; † August 5, 2018 in San German , Puerto Rico ) was Bishop of Mayagüez .

Life

Ulises Aurelio Casiano Vargas first studied education and social sciences at the Universidad Católica Santa María Reina de Ponce and from 1955 philosophy at the Colegio Ponceño de Varones of the Marianists and theology from 1961 at the diocesan seminary of Ponce. He completed his theological studies at the "Our Lady of the Angels" seminar, which worked with Niagara University in Albany, New York. On May 30, 1967, he was ordained a priest by Juan Fremiot Torres Oliver . He was active in pastoral care and then studied at the Catholic University of America , where he obtained a licentiate in canon law . He held various offices in the diocesan curia, such as chancellor, episcopal vicar for pastoral care and vice-president of the ecclesiastical court, as well as a member of the pastoral commission of the Puerto Rican Bishops' Conference. In 1970 he was made a papal honorary chaplain .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on March 4, 1976 first bishop of the three days earlier established diocese Mayagüez. The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico , Luis Cardinal Aponte Martínez , on April 30 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Juan Fremiot Torres Oliver , Bishop of Ponce , and Miguel Rodriguez Rodriguez CSsR , Bishop of Arecibo .

Casiano was president of the Episcopal Conference of Puerto Rico (CEP) from 1998 to 2000 and was president of several committees of the CEP.

On July 6, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
