Ulrich Berges

Ulrich Berges (born December 25, 1958 in Münster ) is a German Roman Catholic Old Testament scholar .

Life

He attended the Cardinal von Galen High School . After graduating from high school in 1977, he joined the congregation of the Sacred Heart Missionaries in 1978 . He studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Salzburg ( pre-diploma ) (1978–1980), majoring in Catholic theology in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University (1980–1983) and completing a licentiate degree in biblical studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (1983–1986: licentiate “ summa cum laude "). After ordination on June 30, 1984, he completed a doctoral degree at the École Biblique in Jerusalem (1986–1988). After obtaining his doctorate in 1988 “summa cum laude” on the subject: “The Rejection of Saul”, he taught at the Facultad de Teologia Pontificia y Civil de Lima (Peru) in theology and exegesis of the Old Testament (1989–1994), where he was director of the Centro de Investigaciones Teológicas (CINTE) and editor of Revista Teologica Limense (RTLi). During the habilitation studies at the Catholic Theol. Faculty in Münster 1994–1998 he was provisional managing director of the “Working Group for Research into the Culture and Religion of the Ancient Near East” in Münster (AZERKAVO) 1995–1997. After his habilitation in January 1998: “The book of Isaiah. Composition and final shape ”he was appointed full professor in the subject of“ Old Testament exegesis ”at the University of Nijmegen on May 1, 1998, where he was director onderzoek (“ Dean of Research ”) from 2003-2005.

On June 1, 2005 he was appointed full university professor in the subject of "Old Testament exegesis" and director of the seminar for the contemporary and religious history of the Old Testament at the University of Münster (successor to Erich Zenger ). Since September 15, 2005 he has been the spokesman for the Center for the History and Culture of the Eastern Mediterranean (GKM) at the WWU. From November 2007 to June 2009 he was a member of the board of the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics in Modern and Pre-Modern Times” at the WWU and project manager “Divine Violence in the Hebrew Bible”. Since 2009 he has been teaching as professor for Old Testament science at the University of Bonn (NF Frank-Lothar Hossfeld ). He was visiting professor at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and at the Facultad de Teologia Pontificia y Civil de Lima. From 2011 to 2015 he was a representative of the Bonn Catholic Theological Faculty at the Faculty Day. Since 2011 he has been a member of the Advisory Board of Estudios Biblicos (Madrid). Since 2011 he has been a member of the Faith Commission (I) of the German Bishops' Conference . He has been an Active Member of the Catholic Biblical Association of America (CBA) since 2012. Since May 2012 he has been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts . Since June 2013 he has been an associate professor in the Theological Faculty of the University of Pretoria . From 2014 to 2018 he was a member of the board of trustees of the Scholarship Association Latin America Germany eV (ICALA). Since 2014 he has been a member of the academic committee of the theological study program Albertus Magnus. He has been a member of the Dependency Cluster at the University of Bonn since 2017.
