Ulrich Nicolai

Ulrich Nicolai (born August 8, 1949 in Gießen ) is a German conductor and professor at the Munich University of Music and Theater .

Ulrich Nicolai was born to Hans and Ellen Nicolai. After graduating from high school in 1968, he first studied physics and mathematics in Marburg and Gießen , then school music, conducting, piano and composition in Frankfurt am Main with Karl Maria Zwißler and Jiří Stárek and in Salzburg with Carl Melles and Herbert von Karajan ; also musicology in Munich . In 1975 he passed the state examination and in 1977 he received diplomas in piano and conducting.

He began his conducting career at the Frankfurt Opera with an internship with Michael Gielen . This was followed by engagements at the opera houses in Munich (first Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz , guest conductor at the Bavarian State Opera ), Hanover, Wiesbaden, Vienna ( Volksoper ) and St. Gallen.

A major focus of his repertoire are world premieres of contemporary music. He conducted world premieres a. a. by Dieter Acker , Harrison Birtwistle , Hans-Jürgen von Bose , Moritz Eggert , Wolfgang Rihm , and Jörg Widmann . In 1994 he was appointed professor at the University of Music and Theater in Munich , where he directed the university orchestra and taught conducting.

From 1996 to 2001 he was Vice President, from 1999 to 2001 Vice Rector, from 2005 until his retirement in 2017 as Dean of Studies at the Munich University of Music. He was a visiting professor at numerous other colleges and universities ( College-Conservatory of Music Cincinnati , University of Music and Performing Arts Graz , Shanghai Conservatory of Music , Wroclaw Music Academy ).

Ulrich Nicolai is the great-great-nephew of the composer and conductor Otto Nicolai . He has been with Edith born in 1983. Johne is married and has three children: Beryl (1984), Carla (1986) and Moritz (1988).
