Ulrich von Destouches

Ulrich von Destouches (born October 14, 1802 in Amberg ; † January 27, 1863 in Munich ) was a German journalist , historian and librarian . Destouches was the founder of the Münchener Tageblatt and later head of the Munich municipal library and city chronicler. He was the author of numerous popular plays.

Life

Ulrich von Destouches was the son of the lawyer and playwright Joseph Anton von Destouches . He was initially raised and taught by his mother. In 1818 he came to Munich with his father and attended grammar school and lyceum there. In 1827 he founded the Münchener Tageblatt , which he edited himself until 1836. In the same year he joined the Munich municipal administration as a librarian.

As such, Destouches received the order from the Munich magistrate in 1843 to collect the books available in the municipal offices at a central point. The library has been continuously expanded through donations, especially through the acquisition of two scholarly bequests. But it was not opened to the public until 1879, if only with the express permission of the mayor. It is still run today as the legal department in Munich City Hall.

At the request of the Bavarian King Ludwig I , the city's magistrate decided in 1845 to write down a city chronicle based on the medieval model, the Munich city chronicle . This task was entrusted to Destouches. In addition, he was allowed to reconstruct the chronicle retrospectively from 1818, the year in which the constitution of the Kingdom of Bavaria came into force. Important and less significant events from urban life have since been noted. So-called inserts such as leaflets or newspaper articles are often attached to an entry. By the time he died, there were 38 volumes in 17 volumes. The work was carried on by his 19 year old son Ernst von Destouches .

In 1839, his stories and poems appeared in two volumes , which also contained the dramatic poem The Faithful Uhlane , which was later quoted very often. He wrote numerous folk plays and plays , including Die Bergknappen in 1838 , Teufel und Schneider in 1843 , The Octoberfest in Munich in 1850 , The Walk to the Bockkeller in 1856 and The Schäfflertanz in Munich in 1857 , which were performed in Munich's suburban theaters and which were very popular with the public were popular. Most of his pieces were never published.

Ulrich von Destouches died on January 27, 1867 at the age of 60 in Munich. He was buried in the old Munich south cemetery. His written estate is in the Bavarian State Library . On the occasion of his 100th birthday, a memorial plaque was attached to the house where he died.
