Ulrich von Sax (abbot)

Ulrich von Sax (* before 1204 ; † September 23, 1220 ) was abbot of St. Gallen from 1204 until his death .

Life

Ulrich came from the family of Barons von Sax , who were wealthy in Eastern Switzerland, and he was the son of Albrecht von Sax . After studying in Paris and Bologna , he was elected Portarius in St. Gallen and on December 18, 1204 as abbot. Probably in 1207 Ulrich received the regalia from King Philip of Swabia . Ulrich supported his brother Heinrich in the fight against Hugo I von Montfort . The Bailiwick over the abbey, which Ulrich had pulled itself after the death of Philip, he gave his brother Henry, who had to give back but this, after Otto IV. Was established as king. In 1208 there was a dispute with the Bishop of Constance Werner von Staufen about Rheineck Castle , which ended with Ulrich's defeat on Breitfeld. When the Staufer Friedrich II moved to Germany in 1212, Ulrich met him and accompanied him to Basel . In the years that followed he was often to be found in the vicinity of Friedrich. Ulrich headed a delegation from Friedrich to Pope Innocent III. who gave him the right to wear the miter . In 1217 Honorius III granted him . the right to miter and ring . Ulrich was appointed several times by the Pope as an arbitrator in church disputes. He expanded the rule of the abbey. Together with his brother Heinrich, he built the Clanx Castle . He also developed a brisk construction activity in St. Gallen. He set up maternity care in the city for poor women . Ulrich was preparing to move to Italy with Frederick II when he died of a fever in 1220.
