The Ulu Temburong National Park ( English Ulu Temburong National Park ) is a 1991 established and the oldest national park in Brunei .

location

The at an altitude of up to 1800 m above sea level. NN with Park is located in the Batu Apoi Forest Reserve in Temburong District in Eastern Brunei and covered with a size of 488.59 square kilometers about 35% of the district.

The park consists of largely pristine forest and is therefore green gem called by Brunei ( "Green Jewel of Brunei"). It is described as the finest example of the sultanate's successful forest protection policy. The main rivers are the Temburong and the Belalong . The national park is an important center of ecotourism with the Ulu Ulu Resort and the Peradayan Forest Reserve .

The starting point for the journey is always Bandar Seri Begawan . The tour first leads to Bangar at the mangrove- covered mouth of the Limbang River in the Bay of Brunei. By car you go to Batang Duri , from where the park on the Temburong River can only be reached by boat. The park can then be explored on foot on a 7 km network of boardwalks , footbridges , bridges and stairs. There is also a Canopy Viewing Walkway on which a suspension bridge suspended from steel cables runs up to 50 m above the forest floor and allows a view of the tree tops and the surrounding area.

The vegetation is determined by wing fruit plants and two- wing fruit trees . There are mangroves in the coastal regions . Grow on the forest floor Rattan , ginger , begonias , Gesneriad , Arum and Ixora . Palm trees , ferns , mosses and lichens grow along the rivers .

There is a diverse fauna including mammals, reptiles, insects and birds. The Müller gibbon is most popular in the treetops and sometimes a little below it. Squirrels , particularly the Borneo tiny squirrels, live near human residences, and black-spotted rock frogs ( Staurois natator ) have also been seen. Snakes like Wagler's lance vipers live in the treetops.

There are National Part numerous bird species as hornbills ( Anorrhinus galeritus ), rhinoceros birds ( Buceros rhinoceros ), Breitrachen , black-yellow Broadbill ( Eurylaimus ochromalus ) and swiftlets .

Hundreds of species of butterflies live there , some of which are very rare. The best known is the Rajah Brooke's Birdwing ( Trogonoptera brookiana ), named " White Raja " in honor of James Brooke, who ruled the area during the colonial period . Another species is the black and white tree nymph enWP ( Idea stolli ). There are also centipedes , large horse ants ( Camponotus gigas ), pointed cicadas (Fulgoridae) and termites .

The national park is under the protection of the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources . The offices of the main office of the national park are at the confluence of the Temburong River in the Sungei Belalong . The national park is part of the international Heart of Borneo agreement .

accommodation

The only accommodation in the national park is the Ulu Ulu Resort, which opened in November 2008 when the facilities in the national park were privatized under the supervision of the Forestry Department. The opening is considered a historic milestone in Brunei tourism because it is the first public-private partnership (PPP) between a private tour organizer (Sunshine Borneo Tours and Travel Sdn Bhd) and the government of Brunei Darussalam . To stay overnight, a booking as part of an Ulu Temburong National Park tour package to and from Bandar Seri Begawan is required.
