action

The film deals with the Cuban refugee problem . Every year thousands of Cubans, so-called balseros (literally: raftsmen ) try to illegally leave the supposed social paradise of Cuba via the sea. The main destination is the coast of Florida in the United States, around 90 miles (150 kilometers) away . This is also the goal of the two friends Raúl and Elio. Both work in the tourism industry and dream of a life that western tourists will set an example for them. When Raúl is accused of attacking tourists after he had an argument with his mother who works as a prostitute , they take their escape plans seriously. Elio's twin sister Lila, for years the siblings were inseparable, notices a strange change in her brother. One day she discovers the primitive raft consisting of only a few boards in a ruin. Lila decides to take the risk and accompanies her brother and his friend on the run.

aftermath

The three young Cuban leading actors Dariel Arrechaga (Raúl), Anailín de la Rúa de la Torre (Lila) and Javier Núñez Florián (Elio) traveled to New York for the Tribeca Film Festival at the end of April 2012 . During a stopover in Miami , the two young actors Anailín de la Rúa and Javier Núñez, both 20 years old, initially disappeared without a trace. A few days later both emerged from their hiding place and announced that they would seek political asylum in the United States.

At the film festival itself, Una Noche received the “Best Camera” award in the “Feature Film” category. The two male leading actors Dariel Arrechaga and Javier Núñez Florián were honored as "Best Actor". Lucy Mulloy was named "Best Newcomer Director".
