The municipality has 16,788 inhabitants on an area of ​​64.92 km² (figures as of June 30, 2011).

It was created in the course of the regional reform of September 29, 2013 by merging the municipalities of Almargem do Bispo , Pero Pinheiro and Montelavar . Almargem do Bispo is the seat of this newly formed municipality.
