Uno von Troil (born February 24, 1746 in Stockholm , † July 27, 1803 in Sätra brunn, Sala parish ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian from 1786 Archbishop of Uppsala. His father was the court preacher and later Archbishop Samuel Troilius .

Life

Von Troil was enrolled at Uppsala University in 1757 at the age of eleven . There he studied a. a. with Johan Ihr and graduated in 1770 with a master's degree.

He then went on a trip abroad and attended various universities. In Göttingen he heard Johann David Michaelis , Johann David Köhler , Christian Wilhelm Franz Walch and Georg Christoph Hamberger . Via France he traveled on to London, where he met Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander , with whom he traveled on to Iceland . They arrived on the island in August 1772, climbed the Hekla volcano, and returned six weeks later via the Hebrides and the Scottish island of Staffa .

After his return he was ordained pastor in 1773 and two years later he was court chaplain .

In 1776 von Troil married Magdalena ("Lona") Elisabet Tersmeden (1753–1794).

In 1778 he became chief pastor of the Nikolaikirche in Stockholm . In 1780 he was elected Bishop of Linköping and six years later archbishop. He served as the spiritual leader of the Church of Sweden until his death . As a theologian influenced by the Enlightenment, he was particularly committed to the reform of the hymn book and the agenda . He was also politically active. As spokesman for the parish priests of the Reichstag , he supported the efforts of King Gustav III. to maintain his absolute rule. However, when he was supposed to sign the Unification and Security Act in 1789, which guaranteed the king greatly expanded rights, he protected against illness and was represented by Bishop Jacob Axelsson Lindblom .

Von Troil was an honorary member of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies and a member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala as well as the bearer of the Grand Cross of the North Star Order .
