action

The sensitive, mentally retarded Joey Larabito is released from prison after a six-year prison sentence for robbery and murder . He visits his older brother Tommy in Staten Island to find temporary accommodation with him. To his surprise, Tommy is now married to the party stripper Lorraine, who is anything but happy about her new roommate. Tommy makes a living doing drug deals, risking Joey breaking probation and going back to prison. In the course of the next time, Joey gains increasing confidence in Lorraines, as he is genuinely trying to find a legal job unlike Tommy. In the short term, he even earns money cleaning windows. Tommy has large debts with his drug supplier Ralphie Scolero, which he will have to repay in full shortly. To make some quick money, Tommy starts selling oregano instead of marijuana to his "customers" .

One evening when Joey Lorraine drives to one of her performances, Tommy gets a visit from cheated customers and his suppliers. He manages to keep her at bay with a revolver. However, Tommy is deeply concerned. Later, when there was a knock at the door, he kills the nocturnal visitor who entered through the unlocked door with his revolver . It's Joey's probation officer . When Joey and Lorraine return, Tommy urges them to flee immediately. Joey discovers the corpse of his probation officer and says literally to Tommy: "I won't take it on my head this time, I won't do that again". Lorraine realizes that Joey was innocent in prison for six years for a crime committed by his brother. She refuses to flee with Tommy and receives support from Joey. Tommy wants to escape alone when suddenly Ralphie and his henchmen break into the house. In the subsequent bloody argument, Lorraine saves Joey's life by shooting one of the thugs. They finally manage to overpower the intruders. Mistakenly assuming that Joey had fled, Tommy Lorraine tries to persuade Lorraine to blame Joey for all homicides. However, Joey witnesses this conversation and hands Tommy the revolver. He asks Tommy to shoot him, but Tommy is unable to do so. The police have now arrived and surrounded the house. Joey leaves the house with his hands up and surrenders. Tommy also follows him with his hands raised, calls out to the police that it's all his fault, pulls out his revolver and shoots the officers. They open fire on Tommy and kill him. Lorraine is slightly injured in the exchange of fire and is hospitalized.

After Joey's innocence is proven, he goes to Lorraine's house. A running radio signals that Lorraine is back home. Joey turns on his heel and walks away without seeing Lorraine again. He buys a ticket and takes the bus to Staten Island, heading for an uncertain future.

criticism

"Quasi-documentary low-budget thriller, behind the effects of blood and violence, an atmospherically dense, carefully observed milieu and character study becomes tangible, in which emotional and mental incrustations are overcome by people trusting each other."

Locations

The film was made in the districts of Port Richmond, Tottenville, New Brighton, Westerleigh and Mariner's Harbor from Staten Iceland ( New York ), where director Buddy Giovinazzo was born and spent his childhood.
