Location of Unterelsbach in Bavaria

Unterelsbach is a district of the Oberelsbach market in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld .

geography

The parish village is located in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve at the junction of the Sonder and Els . The district has a size of about 966 hectares.

history

It is assumed that the original inhabitants of Elsgrund were the Suebi - Alemanni , they had no private property, the whole land was common . There were field names such as B. Cold Elze, that is the All-Elz, the communal pasture for the animals of the Suebi. This is how the river name Els was coined and it gave the village its name. Later the Suebi were ousted by Germanic tribes. A Celtic ring wall , which served as a refuge , also dates from this time . Ober- and Unterelsbach formed the Villa Elspa in the oldest times and separated into two communities in the 13th century.

In 1525 farmers from Unterelsbach also took part in the Peasants' War . The Gangolfsberg near Oberelsbach was an important location for the peasant armies. Many of the local farmers were severely punished by the prince-bishop's court in Mellrichstadt .

On January 1, 1978 Unterelsbach was incorporated into Oberelsbach as part of the municipal reform.

Parish church

The parish of St. Simon and Judas Thaddäus in Unterelsbach was probably donated by the Wechterswinkel monastery. Already in 1453 it had its own parish church.

Catholic Parish Church of St. Simon and Jude

The oldest part of the St. Simon and Judas Church that exists today is the tower built in 1615/1617. It ends with a Echterturmspitze. As the community grew, the old church became too small, so it was decided to build a new church. The tower was to remain in place. The old church was laid in on March 20, 1810 by the villagers. On June 2, 1810, the foundation stone for the new church was laid. It is located under the right choir arch.

The high altar was bought from the Bildhausen monastery .

Construction of the village

Unterelsbach

The villagers built their houses around this church. The original village center with only about four hectares remained unchanged for centuries, and the number of inhabitants has also been about the same for at least 150 years, despite the earlier abundance of children. There were few homeowners who had a farm to themselves. As a rule, several farmers shared a farm. The division of the floor space was relatively simple and clear.

In what is known as “Turkey”, six residential buildings are nested, some with less than 16 square meters of floor space and very little courtyard space.

Architectural monuments

Life and work

Most of the farmers lived from their agriculture, everything was grown in three-field farming . Some farmers still operated linen weaving .

The families lived very poorly, in good years there was usually not even enough hay and straw. The bilberry herb was also used as bedding. The blueberry still grows in abundance in the forests around Unterelsbach today. Blueberries were also picked and sold in the summer.

Surroundings

Saueiche Unterelsbach

About three kilometers south of Unterelsbach is a natural monument, the mighty, several hundred year old sow oak. This is where the swineherd drove their animals until 1892 and the goose shepherd until 1957. Back then there were many oaks around the Gänsewiese, today only the sow oak is left. This has already burned several times and the hole in the trunk could accommodate two to three people seeking protection. In 1970 the hole was bricked up because of the further risk of fire.

Unterelsbach today

Since January 1st, 1978 Unterelsbach belongs to the market town of Oberelsbach. Unterelsbach has a one-group kindergarten which is administered by the St. Elisabeth Association. Events can be held in the Rhönhalle. There are still several craft businesses. There is also a hotel with a tennis facility and various health facilities in the village. There is the Unterelsbach volunteer fire brigade , the TSV Unterelsbach, the karate club, the Rhön Club and the Unterelsbach Music Friends.
