In 1683 the area was first settled by European settlers. The community was originally called "Providence Township", but in 1987 it was divided into Neether Providence Township and Upper Providence Township. In 1850, the municipality of Media was formed from areas of both townships.

The area was originally characterized by agriculture, which is also evident from the construction of a large number of mills. In 1787 the Quaker James Turner founded the Blue Hill School. The Union Library opened in 1813 and 30 years later had over 800 books.

In 1739 the Old Rose Tree Tavern was opened, which in the 19th century became a summer destination for the people of Philadelphia . Steeplechnase and fox hunts were then operated by the "Rose Tree Hunt Club".
