Ursula Cain

Ursula Cain (born April 24, 1927 in Dresden ; † October 16, 2011 in Leipzig ) was a German dancer and dance teacher.

Life

The dancer and dance teacher

Ursula Cain began her dance training at the age of 12 in the preparatory class of the Wigman School for Modern Dance and from 1942 she studied at the dance academy of the Dresden Conservatory until it was closed due to the war. After her final exam, which qualified her as a stage dancer and dance teacher, Cain became a member of the Dore Hoyer group in 1945 and worked in “Dances for Käthe Kollwitz”, “Lied der Zeit” and the “Schießbude” until the ensemble was dissolved. From 1948 Cain was engaged as a modern solo dancer at the Rostock City Theater and from 1949 at the Anhaltisches Landestheater Dessau . Here she danced solo roles in choreographies by Veith Büchel and learned the then orchestra director and later general music director of the Leipzig Opera , Helmut Seydelmann know. From 1951 Cain began her classical ballet studies with Gertrud Steinweg in Leipzig and with Tatjana Gsovsky and Gustav Blank in Berlin. From 1952 she received an engagement at the Städtische Theatern Leipzig as a solo dancer and from 1953 as the first solo dancer. She danced in numerous choreographies by Gertrud Steinweg, Lilo Gruber, Werner Ulbrich, Tom Schilling and Emmy Köhler-Richter , while Heinz K. Urban acted as répétiteur. In October 1960 Ursula Cain danced the Böse Fee in "Sleeping Beauty" in the choreography by Emmy Köhler-Richter in the festival program for the opening of the new Leipzig Opera, which was broadcast on German television in the GDR . At the end of her active stage career , she danced the role of Archisposa in “Apraxas” with Siegfried Prölß in 1962.

From 1979 Ursula Cain worked as a dance teacher for modern dance at the Technical School for Dance / Ballet School of the Leipzig Opera. From 1988 she took over the management of the children's classes.

From 1989 Ursula Cain took over the leadership of the amateur group "Tanzkaleidoskop" at the Heinrich Budde House in Leipzig.

In 1997 she worked on the choreography of the children's classes for the annual matinee of the Leipzig Opera Ballet School.

Second stage career

In 2005 Ursula Cain and her former dancer colleagues from the Leipzig Opera, Christa Franze , Siegfried Prölß and Horst Dittmann began working on the autobiographical dance theater Zeit - dance since 1927 , which has not been in 2006, under the direction of Leipzig choreographer Heike Hennig and Friedrich U. Minkus only celebrated an extraordinary success at the Leipzig Opera. Time - dance since 1927 was filmed under the title Tanz mit der Zeit by Trevor Peters for ZDF and ARTE, was released in German cinemas in 2007/8 and was presented at international film festivals. The book by the author Marion Appelt about her life and dance history was published in 2008 under the title of the same name.

From 2007 Ursula Cain continued her second stage career in the contemporary dance theater ZeitSprünge by Heike Hennig with the unique ensemble Heike Hennig & Co in over 30 performances and guest appearances at international festivals. Her pas de deux with Horst Dittmann to the slow movement from the 5th symphony by Gustav Mahler , which is also shown in the film, is one of the highlights in the dance theater of the generations by Heike Hennig. In 2008 Ursula Cain danced the Alcina with Horst Dittmann as Ruggiero, directed and choreographed by Heike Hennig, at the Handel Festival in Halle (Saale) . Ursula Cain was considered the oldest active Wigman student on the stage.

Honors

In 1993, for the 300th anniversary of the Leipzig Opera, Ursula Cain was made an honorary member.

On her 70th birthday, the director Prof. Udo Zimmermann congratulated the "dream ballerina" of the 60s with the words:

“Perhaps it was this combination of Wigman and Gsovsky, combined with Leipzig, where these two greats of their time worked together, that made it possible for you to become the epitome of the classically lyrical ballerina here. In any case, you could only become that because you were one of the few who brought everything with them at this time. "

In March 2008 Ursula Cain was named the Grande Dame of Leipzig dance by the specialist journal Ballettanz .

Federal President Horst Köhler honored her with an invitation to the office of the Federal President at Bellevue Palace in Berlin on March 27, 2008.

Commemoration

On the initiative and under the patronage of Sabine von Schorlemer , the Ursula Cain Prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, will be awarded from 2015 . The Saxon Dance Prize awarded. The first award was made to the Brel production of the Saxony State Theaters .
