Ursula Marie Staudinger (born April 3, 1959 in Nuremberg ) is a psychologist and gerontologist . She was Professor of Sociomedical Sciences and Professor of Psychology at Columbia University , New York. Staudinger has been the rector of the Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden) since 2020 .

biography

Staudinger studied psychology from 1978 to 1984 at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and at the Clark University in Massachusetts . She carried out her dissertation at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development (MPIB) in Berlin. He received his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin in 1988. Staudinger was then a research assistant at the Berlin Academy of Sciences until 1992 . She then returned to the MPIB as a project manager , where she worked until 1999. In 1997 she completed her habilitation in psychology at the Free University of Berlin . The time at the MPI was interrupted by a substitute professorship at the University of Halle-Wittenberg .

Staudinger worked from 1999 to 2001 as an associate professor at the TU Dresden. In 2000 she was visiting professor at the University of Florida . From 2001 to 2003 Staudinger was professor for developmental psychology of the life span at the TU Dresden. From May to July 2003 she was visiting professor at Stanford University . From 2003 to July 2013 she was professor and vice-president at Jacobs University Bremen , where she founded the Jacobs Center on Lifelong Learning and Institutional Development and headed it as dean. Between 2013 and 2017 Staudinger was founding director of the Columbia Aging Center at Columbia University, New York, and headed the associated International Longevity Center (ILC). She was appointed to the Robert N. Butler Endowed Professorship and Professor of Psychology. On March 17, 2020 she was elected rector of the TU Dresden and took over her office on August 18, 2020, succeeding Hans Müller-Steinhagen .

Ursula M. Staudinger has been Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Institute for Population Research since 2012 . She has been a member of the University Council of the Ruhr University Bochum since 2018 .

In 2014 she received the Braunschweig Research Prize . She was awarded the SENECA medal 2017 for her successful scientific work.

Work areas

Ursula M. Staudinger's areas of work include topics from the developmental psychology of the lifespan, such as potentials of lifelong development ( resilience and neural plasticity ), the development of insight into life, lifestyle and wisdom about the lifespan, aging and productivity, as well as intergenerational relationships. She is a member and spokesperson of the Scientific Commission on Demographic Change and was the spokesperson for the working group “ Aging in Germany ” (completed in 2009) and a member of the “ Future with Children ” working group (completed in 2012), which is run by the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina - National Academy of The sciences were initiated in order to advise politics with their opinions and recommendations. Staudinger was also the spokesperson for the Mastering Demographic Change in Europe working group (2014). The statement, signed jointly by eight European science academies and supported by ALLEA (All European Academies), formulates recommendations on how the opportunities of demographic change in Europe can be better used.
