Ursula Stock (born July 28, 1937 in Stuttgart ) is a German sculptor , painter and draftsman .

Life

Ursula Stock was born in Stuttgart as the only child of the businessman Carl Stock (1907–1943) and his wife Gertrud Stock b. Born harsh. She studied humanities and social sciences at the Universities of Munich (1957–1960) and Hamburg (1960–1961). Then she began a three-year study of painting at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg with Klaus Bendixen , Hans Thiemann , Richard Lindner and Eduardo Paolozzi . Stays in Egypt, Turkey and Mexico followed in the early 1960s. From 1969 she lived and worked in Stuttgart as a painter, draftsman and sculptor. In 1977 she started working with the architect Heinz Rall . As an urban planner, he was the driving force behind the renovation of Güglingen's old town, and Ursula Stock took part in the artistic design of squares and buildings. In 1987 the couple moved to Güglingen into the residential and studio building built by Rall at Stockheimer Straße 47.

Ursula Stock was married in her first marriage (1961–1968) to the ethnologist and Old Americanist Peter Tschohl . In 1999 she married Heinz Rall.

Abstract beginnings

Ursula Stock became known in the late 1960s for her three-dimensional room cuts , “picture stages with distant interiors of wide rooms, filled with mighty monuments”. The spatial cuts soon found their two-dimensional counterpart in the serigraphs from 1971–1974 ( Raumvorschlag I , 1972). At the beginning of the 1970s she created "initially operating with a constructive treasure trove of forms", abstract, color-painted, shield-like wooden reliefs "with several layers on top of each other" ( Rad-Plastik , 1971), to which she “looked at pre-Columbian sculptures on a study trip to Central America "And which should represent" animistic metaphors of modern machines ". During this time in Stuttgart she realized abstract geometric architectural reliefs ( concrete relief Tiefenbachschule , 1972/1973) and a free sculpture ( stainless steel stele Fuchsrainschule , 1974).

Surreal painting

In the 1970s, Ursula Stock mainly devoted herself to painting. Without initially completely detaching from abstract painting ( Raumvorschlag I + II , 1972), she approached “an image conception determined by the surreal ” ( Unreal Landscape , 1974; Orpheus Cycle , 1979). The real set pieces of her compositions are ancient, often smashed statues, torsos , skulls and masks, temples and columns, labyrinths and ruins. But not only lifeless objects populate her pictures, sometimes trees, bushes and leaves also animate the picture, and again and again wings, while depictions of people are still the exception at this time.

Free sculptor

In the late 1970s, Ursula Stock shifted the focus of her work to sculpture, but continued to produce paintings and large-format drawings. The reason for this change was the order for the Weinbrunnen in Güglingen. The fountain sculpture was made in the foundry of the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart under Herbert Heinzel.

The focus of her sculptural work is the human being as a full figure, torso, bust or head. The often archaic-looking figures “are strict, statuesque, earthy; yet they seem fragile, fragile, sensitive. ”In addition to human sculptures, horse sculptures were also created, some of them monochrome blue or rusty red, with overlong necks, including the Quadriga Variations (2000) for the exhibition Quadriga zügellos in Berlin (a stylized quadriga made of four horse heads and one Charioteer) and the three-headed Cavalli horse fountain in Güglingen (1994). The Berlin Quadriga inspired Stock to design furniture, which she presented at her second Berlin exhibition, Brandenburger Torheiten (2005), which was followed by other models in the following years.

Exhibitions

Ursula Stock participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1968 to 1988, especially in Germany with a focus on southern Germany. Some of her sculptures are shown on various sculpture trails in Germany.

Works in public space

Seasons fountain , Talheim, 1991

.

In 1979 her first commissioned sculpture was created in Güglingen. Her first bronze casting was the Weinbrunnen in the Deutsches Hof (1979), which, thanks to a special fitting, can donate water as well as wine. The fountain stick is a bronze double figure, which with its multi-breasted bosom made from giant clusters is reminiscent of ancient goddesses of printability. The "Siamese" double head of the figure with the vine leaves already indicates the four seasons , which she created for Stuttgart, Freudenstadt and Güglingen (1983, 1987, 1989).

The Tree of Life Fountain (1988) in Güglingen's town hall shows a stylized tree that under its crown offers a family - woman, man and child - a protective shelter. The tree of life motif , like the seasons motif, returns in the Seasons Fountain in Talheim (1991), where three allegorical figures are grouped under the tree of life, symbolizing the three seasons - spring, summer and winter, and at the same time the ages and times of day.

In addition to the sculptural works for public space, murals, floor mosaics, glass pictures and glass windows for public buildings and restaurants in Güglingen were also created.

Millennium Fountain

Millennium Fountain , Sigmaringen-Laiz, 2000.

Note: The following description is from Ursula Stock.

The Millennium Fountain (2000) on Rathausplatz in Sigmaringen - Laiz was created on the occasion of the turn of the millennium . The figure is aligned diagonally, it takes up the main axis of the place, church-town hall, and is supposed to represent the people in transition in several ways. On the back, the figure wears a face mask with water pouring out of its eye sockets. The aluminum walls give the figure architectural support. A ball on the edge of the pool, connected to the central figure, donates drinking water from a snake's head. Three spring balls complete the water feature.
