The Uutuanjoki ( Finnish ) ( Norwegian Munkelva , North Sami Uvdu ) is a river in northern Lapland .
The river has its origin northeast of the Inarijärvi in Finnish Lapland . From there it flows in a northeastern direction and passes the Norwegian border. It finally flows into the Munkefjord , a side fjord of the Neidenfjord and Varangerfjord , and the Barents Sea .
The Uutuanjoki runs east of the Näätämöjoki ( Norwegian Neidenelva ), which flows a few kilometers north into the Neidenfjord. The catchment area covers 402.9 km², of which 232 km² are in Finland.
The river and its surroundings are largely untouched. The European route 6 crosses the river only immediately before the estuary . The Uutuanjoki is suitable for canoe tours. There are salmon and sea trout in the river .
Much of the catchment area in Finland is in the Vätsäri Wilderness Area ( Vätsärin erämaa ). The estuary is in the Neiden and Munkefjord nature reserve .
