Kamenz grew up in Münster in Westphalia. After graduating from high school in St. Kaspar with boarding school for Missionaries vom Precious Blood in Neuenheerse in 1976 and military service in Hamminkeln and Münster, he studied economics and business administration at the University of Münster from 1977 to 1982 , and from 1979 to 1980 computer science at the Fernuniversität in Hagen . After graduating with a degree in business administration, he worked from 1983 to 1986 as a research assistant and research assistant at the research center for general and textile market economy at the University of Münster. He received his doctorate in 1986 with the dissertation "Use of income in the family life cycle" by the economics faculty of the University of Münster. He then worked as a consultant in the Marketing / Product Management department of Deutsche Olivetti GmbH in Frankfurt, then as European product manager at Adam Opel AG in Rüsselsheim and from 1991 to 1993 as a management consultant at MC Marketing Corporation AG in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe and 1993 until 1994 as managing director of Dr. Kamenz & Partner works in Frankfurt am Main .

Since 1994 he has been a professor at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences. In 1995 he founded the ProfNet professors network with four other professors, which networks the research of domestic and foreign application-oriented professors. In 1997 he co-founded ProfNet Service & Dienstleistungen GmbH, which was closed in 2019. From 1997 to 2001 he was deputy spokesman for the Association for Marketing (AfM). In 1998 he was the founder of the ProfNet Institute for Internet Marketing e. V. in Dortmund, which he still leads today as Scientific Director and Chairman of the Board. Since 2001 he has been Adjunct Professor at the University of Canberra in Australia. From 2001 to 2003 he was the spokesman for the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Marketing (AfM), a network of 500 professors in Germany. From 2003 to 2012 he was honorary professor at Educatis University in Switzerland. For the 25th anniversary of the ProfNet professors network, the establishment of the ProfNet Foundation in Münster is planned for 2020.

Act

As one of the first professors in Germany, Kamenz dealt with the use of the Internet in market-oriented corporate management in the 1990s. In 1996 he coined the term internet marketing in Germany and in 1998 founded the first German research institute for internet marketing in Dortmund. In two elections to the 100 most important people on the Internet, he was chosen as the only professor. In 1999, a research trip on the subject of the Internet took him to the most important universities (Berkeley, Evanston, Harvard, MIT, Stanford) in the USA and the most important companies (Cisco, eBay, Intel, Netscape) in Silicon Valley. As editor, co-author and author he published a total of 100 studies on internet marketing.

Since 2005 Kamenz has only dealt with one sub-area of internet marketing: Use of new media and technologies to improve the performance of German universities and the German university system. In some cases he puts his research results into practice within the ProfNet professors network and the ProfNet Institute for Internet Marketing, such as B. Development of a digital text database (status May 2020: 1.2 million scientific texts), text and plagiarism analyzes of academic examination papers (status May 2020: 180,000 analyzes), online evaluation of courses, measurement of professorial performance. Since 2016, he has been running the HochschulTrainer app, a free platform for all professors and students for imparting knowledge on the Internet and on smartphones.

ProfNet Institute for Internet Marketing e. V.

Kamenz heads the private ProfNet Institute for Internet Marketing. In this function, he offered Federal Education Minister Annette Schavan in 2011 "to analyze all estimated 1,000 dissertations of the current and ever active federal politicians for indications of plagiarism for an amount of less than € 50,000". In the same year he declared his intention to check all around 200,000 examination papers at German universities for possible plagiarism . For this purpose, he uses a specially developed computer program and a database which, according to his own statements, contains 24,000 scientific papers as a basis for review. However, his efforts to offer universities his services for a fee in a media-effective manner were unsuccessful. In a test report on Annette Schavan's dissertation , which he published on January 22, 2013, the plagiarism expert Debora Weber-Wulff , who tested Kamenz's software in 2010, discovered numerous errors.

Five months before the federal election on September 22, 2013 , Kamenz announced that he would review the dissertations of all of the Bundestag candidates.

On September 29, 2013, the magazine Focus published a report on a suspicion of plagiarism that Kamenz had raised with regard to Frank-Walter Steinmeier's dissertation . The publishing house Hubert Burda Media , in which Focus appears, had given Kamenz reimbursement for the digitization of books "detached from the examination of certain dissertations".

Frederic Hanusch and Claus Leggewie (both political scientists at the Institute for Cultural Studies in Essen ) wrote in an article published on October 9:

“The self-proclaimed scout from Dortmund, Uwe Kamenz, acts like a bounty hunter, works with questionable methods and to sell his own plagiarism software. This has to be talked about. The risk of being convicted of targeted and possibly paid character assassination must increase. "

On October 20, after an analysis of the test report, the political scientist Stephan Leibfried accused Kamenz that he was not interested in “exposing scientific misconduct”, but rather with “deliberately weird accusations and defamation of a good name”.

On November 5, 2013, the University of Giessen announced that Frank-Walter Steinmeier would not revoke his doctoral degree and that the examination procedure would be discontinued. There were "technical weaknesses" in the doctoral thesis, but no intent to deceive or scientific misconduct.

Kamenz was then sharply criticized in the Süddeutsche Zeitung :

“A university professor has accused Frank-Walter Steinmeier of plagiarism without any basis. That now falls back on the plagiarism hunter. ... It was mean. Exposing a celebrity without a solid foundation is not appropriate. "

Shortly thereafter, in an article in the Tagesspiegel , Kamenz was accused of having “taken over figures, tables and text from other authors in whole or in part” in his textbook Marktforschung , published in 1997, without citing the source. The lawyer Gerhard Dannemann saw this as a clear violation of "the rules of good scientific practice".
