Uwe Röhl (born February 16, 1925 in Husum ; † August 12, 2005 in Lübeck ) was a German church musician, organist and composer .

Life

Röhl was born in Husum as the 8th child of the provost who worked there. After his first employment in Friedrichstadt and Tönning , he became a church musician in Unna in 1949 , where he founded the Philipp-Nicolai-Kantorei. In 1955 he was appointed to the Schleswig Cathedral . Here he founded the summer concert series of the Schleswig-Holstein organ concerts .

In 1966 he went to Lübeck as deputy director of the music academy (director was Jens Rohwer ) and head of the church music department of the later Lübeck University of Music . From 1967 to 1990 he was Erwin Zillinger's successor organist and cantor at Lübeck Cathedral - an office that he assumed on an honorary basis and as a “temporary solution”. Röhl played a key role in the fact that the organ that was lost in the war by Arp Schnitger was replaced in 1970 by a modern one made by the organ builder Marcussen from Aabenraa . Röhl was professor and founding rector of the Lübeck University of Music from 1973 to 1976.

From 1976 to 1989 Röhl worked as head of the music department at NDR . For the NDR he won the conductor Günter Wand . He also advocated that the opening and closing concerts of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival usually took place in Lübeck and were recorded and broadcast by the North German Broadcasting Corporation.

Uwe Röhl has received several awards. In 1974 he received the Art Prize of the State of Schleswig-Holstein , 1985 the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class, 1986 the Hanse Culture Prize of the Vereins- und Westbank and in 1998 the highest honor for his services to the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, the Bene Merenti commemorative coin .
