The Véhicule blindé multi-rôles ( VBMR ) "Griffon" (armored multi-purpose vehicle) is an armored troop transport . It replaces the Véhicule de l'avant blindé (VAB) within the French army as part of the Scorpion program .

A light version with only four wheels is also being prepared as the Véhicule blindé multi-rôles léger ( VBMR-L ) "Serval" (Light Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle). With the same functions as its counterpart, it is intended for use in emergency conditions, including the possibility of accommodating two vehicles in the Airbus A400M - in contrast, only one “VBMR” can be transported.

history

The French army had been keen to replace its Véhicule de l'avant blindé (VAB) since the early 2000s . To this end, it provides for 2080 copies of the VBMR to be procured in line with the 2020 target set out in the 2013 White Paper on Defense and National Security ( Livre blanc sur la défense et la sécurité nationale 2013 ) . The Department of Defense outsourced the development to Nexter , Thales Group , and Renault Trucks Defense .

The General Direction for Armaments ( Direction générale de l'Armement ) announced its approval for the procurement on June 24, 2019, and the first examples were delivered on July 4, 2019. By the end of 2019, 92 vehicles should have been added to the force. The vehicles were first presented to the public at the military parade on July 14, 2019 on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées .

In 2025, the infantry is said to have achieved their first ability to improve information and to engage in cooperative combat with the model SCORPION ( Engin blindé de reconnaissance et de combat - armored combat and reconnaissance equipment ). The Griffon armored multi-purpose vehicles will replace the 40-year-old VABs from 2019, and half of the Griffons ordered will then have been delivered.

The price per piece is given as one million euros. About 70% of the equipment is the same as in the EBRC Jaguar , which is to replace the ERC-90 Sagaie and AMX-10 RC , including the vehicle suspension, supplied by the Quiri company in Strasbourg , the on- board intercom from Elips d'Elno in Argenteuil and that Acoustic fire alarm system Pilar V from Metravib in Lyon .

The vehicles are designed to simplify maintenance. For example, they are equipped with sensors on the most important vehicle components such as wheel suspension, brake pads and transmission , which enable predictive maintenance. They have civilian standard engines that are adapted to the military conditions, in particular in order to be able to use the different types of fuel that are available in Africa and at other locations.

Versions

VBMR

The VBMR should consist of six main versions, including the troop transport version, which in turn is divided into four sub-versions.

Troop transport

Transporting troops is the main task of the «Griffon», four different versions are possible:

FELIN  : the "Fantassin à équipements et liaisons intégrés" (FELIN) version - in Germany as Future Soldier called
Section de tir tireur d'élite (sniper fire area);
MMP  : with anti-tank missiles Missile Moyenne Portée
Ravitaillement (supply).
  • other planned versions:
Poste de commandement (PC) - command vehicle

The VBMR PC is a command and liaison vehicle

Santé - ambulance vehicle
Véhicule d'observation d'artillerie (VOA) - artillery observation vehicle
Génie - pioneer vehicle
NRBC - NBC defense vehicle

Other versions

Mortier embarqué pour l'appui au contact (MEPAC) (vehicle mortar for support)

In July 2019, Defense Secretary Florence Parly announced the order for 54 2R2M MEPAC mortar vehicles to be assigned to the artillery. The semi-automatic mortar has a caliber of 120 mm, the rate of fire is 10 rounds per minute.
