Víctor Hugo Montaño (born May 1, 1984 in Cali ) is a Colombian football player who currently plays for Deportivo Toluca .

Career

As a youth player

Although he was born in Cali, Montaño began his professional career as a teenager in the CD Los Millonarios club in Bogotá . He showed good approaches in Colombia and therefore moved at the age of 20, on June 26, 2004, to FC Istres , who had just been promoted to Ligue 1 , where he received a one-year contract. Montaño played 33 first division games in his first first division season and scored two goals, but could not prevent his club from finishing last in Ligue 1 and relegated back to Ligue 2 .

Montpellier

After the relegation of his club, he was sold to the Ligue 2 club HSC Montpellier . During his time at Montpellier, he became known for his great technique and powerful right foot. After playing four seasons in Ligue 2 with Montpellier , the club rose in 2009 , finishing second, just two points behind the first, RC Lens . This season Montaño finished second on the scorers list with 15 goals, he scored three goals less than Grégory Thil , and contributed to the success of his club with seven assists to goals.

In his club's first season in the first division, Montpellier was fifth with 69 points, just two points behind a Champions League place. The other two promoted clubs, Le Mans and US Boulogne , performed much worse and were relegated straight back to the second division, with Montaño scoring goals in the victorious games against both clubs. Montaño played a major role in Montpellier's success, scoring eleven goals in 84 shots during the season and providing three assists that led to goalscoring. Including an impressive game against Lille on November 22, 2009, where his team won 2-0 with two goals scored by him, and a tough game on December 23, 2009, in which his team achieved a dramatic 2-1 win against Lyon came.

Rennes stadium

After five successful years with HSC Montpellier, Montaño moved to Rennes on July 11, 2010 for a transfer fee of 6.5 million euros. He signed a four-year contract with this club and was signed to replace Jimmy Briand , who moved to Lyon . He made his debut for the club on August 14, 2010, the 1st matchday of the 1st division against AS Nancy . He scored the 1-0 and gave a template for Yacine Brahimi , so that his team won 3-0. On January 9, 2011, Montaño scored the first two goals in a game for his club, which ended in a 7-0 victory in the Coupe de France against AS Cannes .

After a devastating 5-1 defeat against FC Sochaux on January 29, 2011, Rennes temporarily reached the top of the table in the first division with five consecutive wins on March 5, 2011. Montaño was very useful in that, scoring three goals in three close games. The first goal was on February 13th against relegation-threatened OGC Nice and the winning goal to make it 2-0. Seven days later, he scored in the 88th minute with a penalty against FC Toulouse and Stade Rennes rose to second place in the table. On February 26, Rennes played host to RC Lens , with Abdoulrazak Boukari and Montaño scoring and overtaking the Lille OSC team in the table. After that game, Montaño only hit the net twice for the rest of the season. He scored a goal and provided an assist for Jérôme Leroy in the win against AS Saint-Étienne on May 15, 2011 and scored once against champions Lille on May 29. Rennes ran out of steam towards the end of the season and only finished 6th but secured a place in the UEFA Europa League qualifying. Montaño ended his first season with the Breton club as an important part of the storm. He was active in 31 Ligue 1 games, scoring nine goals and providing four assists.

2011/12 season

His second season in Brittany started out much like his first. In the second game of the third qualifying round against Georgian club Olimpi Rustawi , Montaño scored a goal in the 75th minute and Julien Féret scored another ten minutes later, giving the French team a 7-2 win. The start of the first division season was also impressive for Rennes, Montaño scored a goal on the first game and provided a template for another on the first day of the new Ligue 1 season. This time his team played against the newly promoted FCO Dijon and won 5-1.

On August 18, 2011, Montaño scored the victory of the first decisive Europa League play-off game against Red Star Belgrade in Serbia. His winning goal to make it 2-0 in the 75th minute secured Stade Rennes control of the game and favored them to reach the group stage. In the second game, Montaño opened the scoring with his goal in the 10th minute and was later substituted for Stéphane Dalmat , with Rennes winning 4-0 at home and the overall record 6-1 for Rennes. On September 18, Montaño gave his side a 1-0 lead against AS Nancy in the 19th minute after his strike partner Jonathan Pitroipa gave him the ball. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Return to Montpellier

On August 7, 2013 Montaño returned to HSC Montpellier. He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2017 and is said to have cost the club 800,000 euros in transfer. On January 2, 2015, the contract was terminated by mutual agreement. Montaño played 222 times for Montpellier and scored 54 goals.

Deportivo Toluca

On January 3, 2015, Montaño moved to Deportivo Toluca.

Career in the national team of Colombia

Montaño played with the Colombian U-20 national soccer team at the 2003 Junior World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and helped Colombia take third place with a 2-1 win over Argentina.

On March 26, 2011, he made his debut for the Colombian national soccer team in a 2-0 win in a friendly against Ecuador .
