The container ships of the type VWS 4000 are a series of seven identical sister ships , which were commissioned by AP Møller-Mærsk in Copenhagen and built at the Volkswerft Stralsund .

history

When the order was placed, the shipyard belonged to the Mærsk Group before it was sold to the Hegemann Group in 2007 . The ships built in 2006 and 2007, which sailed under the flag of the United Kingdom , were initially managed by The Maersk Company Limited in London . The ships in the series now fly the flag of Denmark and are managed by Møller-Mærsk.

The Maersk Boston , built in 2006, is the first of the seven ships and thus the model ship in the series. The Maersk Beaumont was delivered in 2007 as the last ship of the class . All seven ships in the VWS 4000 series were originally named after US locations.

technology

The ships are 294.10 m long and 32.18 m wide and have panamax dimensions . They are the largest ships built at Volkswerft Stralsund. With the twelve-cylinder main engine from Wärtsilä - Sulzer (type: 12RT-FLEX 96C), which has an output of 68,640 kW , the ships can reach a speed of 29.2  kn , making them the fastest container ships in the world when they were built.

The ships have a bow and a stern thruster. They also have retractable stabilizers that dampen rolling movements and thus prevent containers from going overboard .

The bridge is located in the midship area, which improves the forward visibility compared to a bridge located aft and more containers can be stowed on deck in the fore ship area. The engine room is also located amidships, which means that more space for containers below deck has been gained in the aft area. The power of the machine is transmitted to the propeller , which was manufactured by Mecklenburger Metallguss in Waren (Müritz) , via an approximately 100 m long shaft . Four generators with an output of 2765 kW each were installed for the power supply .

Some of the ships in China were equipped with modified bulges in 2012 , the shape of which is designed for operation with more varying drafts. The converted units have been used in the feeder fleet of Maersk subsidiary Seago Line since the conversion .
