Vaassen is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland in the municipality of Epe . Vaassen is 10 kilometers north of Apeldoorn and 25 kilometers south of Zwolle . The eastern edge is affected by the A50 motorway.
On January 1, 2017, the population was 12,465.
history
The first signs of residents in the area are prehistoric burial mounds northwest of Vaassen, which date from the Iron Age . The inhabitants lived from agriculture and hunting. The name of the village comes from the word "Fasna" and means a kind of grass. The village is first mentioned in a document of 891 or 892 from the Codex Laureshamensis .
Vaassen was an independent municipality until the end of 1817 and was then incorporated into the municipality of Epe.
In the 1950s, the government billeted large groups of people from the Moluccas , the so-called "Moluccans" in Vaassen. Even today they form a sizeable community of around 1,000 people, which sometimes leads to problems with long-established population groups.
Attractions
- The main attraction of Vaassen is the moated castle Kasteel De Cannenburgh , which was built in the 16th century on the initiative of Maarten van Rossum on the remains of an old castle.
- The Reformed Church of Vaassen is in the center of the village. The church tower was built around 1500.
