Valzhyna Mort ( Belarusian Вальжына Морт / Walschyna Mort , born 1981 in Minsk ) is a poet and translator of English and Polish literature who lives in Washington, DC . The Belarusian is also an American citizen .
Life
Growing up in the former Soviet Union, Valzhyna Mort did not learn Belarusian until she was a teenager , which before 1991 was "not taken very seriously" and was considered "the language of the lower people". She completed her English studies at the State Linguistic University in Minsk and has lived in Washington, DC since 2005. Mort has been writing since she was 18, now also in English, and has been a lecturer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County since autumn 2009 . In the summer of 2013 she was teaching poetry at the Humboldt University in Berlin .
The author, who originally wanted to become a singer after visiting the opera Carmen , occasionally appears with an accordion at her readings . She took part in international literary events in Germany, Ireland , Lithuania , Slovenia and Sweden and received several awards. Her selection volume Factory of tears , which contains the original poems and translations by Elizabeth Oehlkers Wright and Franz Wright , is the first ever Belarusian-English book. Further translations into Swedish and German followed.
A review by Ilma Rakusa describes Mort's style and motifs : “[Her] poems contain whole worlds: West-Eastern landscapes and sensitivities, everyday and fairytale scenarios, visionary utopias and laconic insights, enchanting memories and profound death metaphors. Not only is the variety of motifs surprising, but also the register: between cheerful and melancholy , between dreamy and ruthlessly direct. "
