Vanilla carinata is a species of vanilla ( Vanilla ) plant in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). The climbing plant is found in the southeast of Brazil .

description

Vanilla carinata is an evergreen climber. The petiole is very short, the leaves are elongated, the front ends almost blunt. The leaf length is 12.5 to 15 centimeters.

The inflorescence axis becomes up to 10 centimeters long. The bracts are 0.4 to 0.5 inches long, oval shaped, they end blunt. The ovary is about 4 inches long. The sepals and lateral petals are lanceolate or oblong, blunt at the end, they are 5 to 5.7 inches long. The lip is 4.3 centimeters slightly shorter than the other petals. It is somewhat three-lobed and ends bluntly. A distinct keel runs along the center of the lip. The lip is hairless except for a scaly tuft of hair. The column is club-shaped, it becomes 3.7 centimeters long, on the underside it is hairy.

distribution

Vanilla carinata is native to the Organ Mountains in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro .

Botanical history

This orchid was described by Robert Allen Rolfe in 1896 . The specific epithet carinata comes from the Latin carinatus , "keeled", and describes the shape of the lip.

The type specimen consists of a few poorly preserved flowers without stems or leaves. Various authors consider Vanilla carinata to be a synonym for other types of vanilla: Hoehne saw it as a synonym for Vanilla planifolia , Govaerts as a synonym for Vanilla gardneri , Soto Arenas and Cribb suspect an identity with Vanilla chamissonis or Vanilla vellozii . Due to the inadequately preserved material, an unequivocal assignment is not possible. The eponymous keels on the lip could also be an artifact that can be traced back to the poor state of preservation.
