Systematics and botanical history

Vanilla palembanica was first described by Johannes Elias Teijsmann and Simon Binnendijk in 1867 .

Within the genus Vanilla , Vanilla palembanica is classified in the subgenus Xanata and there in the section Thetya , which contains all species of the palaeotropic plants . After Portères similar Vanilla palembanica of Vanilla griffithii from which it differs by the two-line arrangement of flowers as well as the non-curved, triangular fruits. Soto Arenas and Cribb also see Vanilla griffithii as a close relative, but also mention a possible relationship to the group around Vanilla abundiflora . However, too little material is known from Vanilla palembanica for a more precise assessment .
