Varduhi Abrahamyan ( Armenian Վարդուհի Աբրահամյան , Warduhi Abrahamjan ; born in Yerevan on November 20 ) is an Armenian opera singer with an alto voice .

life and work

Abrahamyan comes from a family of musicians and studied in her hometown of Yerevan and in Marseille, where she won the competition at the local conservatory. Her first roles were Olga in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin at the Yerevan Opera and Polina in Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame , which she sang first in Toulouse and then at the Opéra National de Paris .

France quickly became her new musical home, and the artist has since appeared on numerous opera stages in the country: at the Paris Opera, she also played Maddalena in Rigoletto , the page in Salome , Bersi in Andrea Chénier , Cornelia in Giulio Cesare in Egitto and will soon be seen and heard there as Isabella in L'italiana in Algeri , and as Ottone in a Robert Wilson production of L'incoronazione di Poppea . At the Théâtre du Châtelet she sang the title role in Handel's Rinaldo and Néris in Cherubini's Médée under Marc Minkowski in de Fallas El amor brujo , at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées . In Nancy and Caen she appeared as Maddalena, at the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier as Nerestano in Bellinis Zaira , in Saint-Etienne, Versailles and at the Opéra de Marseille as Glucks Orfeo , in Toulon as Carmen . At the world premiere of Bruno Mantovani's opera Akhmatova in March 2011 at the Opéra Bastille , she played the role of Lydia Tchoukovskaïa.

Outside France Abrahamyan could be heard mainly with baroque music and original sound ensembles. At the Glyndebourne Festival Opera 2011 she sang Goffredo in a Robert Carsen production of Rinaldo with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Ottavio Dantone . In this role she was also heard in concert at the London Proms and with Il pomo d'oro under Riccardo Minasi at the Theater an der Wien . At this house she also played Malcolm Groeme in Rossini's La donna del lago and sang in concert performance of Andronico in Vivaldi's Giustino , with the Virtuosi delle muse under Stefano Molardi . With the Complesso barocco under Alan Curtis , she made a guest appearance - as Polinesso in Ariodante - in concerts in Bucharest and Torino. At the Zurich Opera House she took over the Bradamante in Handel's Alcina at the beginning of 2014 , Cecilia Bartoli sang the title role and the Orchestra La Scintilla under Giovanni Antonini played .

In 2015 she was seen as Carmen at the Bolschoi Theater and made her debut in this role in 2020 at the Bavarian State Opera .

In the concert hall the artist sings mainly oratorios , but also the Wesendonck songs by Richard Wagner .
