Varty Hart

Varty Hart (actually Vartan Haroutunian , born March 23, 1922 in Everett , Massachusetts , † July 9, 2007 in Hanover, Massachusetts ) was an American jazz saxophonist and jazz club owner who played in the Boston jazz scene in the 1950s and 1960s was active.

Hart played in jam sessions with Red Allen and JC Higginbotham during the war , with nationally known bands in local ballrooms. His greatest role model was Lester Young . With Al Vega he had his own band until 1943 both were drafted for military service, which he served in the Air Force. After his discharge from the Air Force, he briefly studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music, which he soon left to go on tour with Freddie Slack . On his return to Boston he worked with young bebop musicians such as Jaki Byard , Charlie Mariano and Serge Chaloff ; In 1953 he was co-founder of the Jazz Workshop , from which he emerged from the jazz club of the same name and became its managing director. He also played in Herb Pomeroy's big band. In The Jazz Workshop guest appearances such jazz greats as Stan Getz , Art Blakey , Max Roach , Carmen McRae , John Coltrane , Herbie Mann and Dizzy Gillespie . From 1966 Hart ran another jazz club in Boston, Varty's Jazz Room in the Hotel Bradford, where stars such as Anita O'Day , the Art Farmer - Jimmy Heath Quintet, Erroll Garner , Carmen McRae, Junior Mance and Horace Silver performed. However, the club only existed for half a year; Hart then ended his career in the music business to work as the manager of a supermarket chain.
