description

Vegetative characteristics

Velezia rigida is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 7 to 15, rarely up to 30 centimeters. The stem is stiff, richly branched and glandular and downy.

The oppositely arranged leaves are linear-subleaf with a length of 10 to 20 millimeters.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from March to June. One or two up to six flowers are present on more or less all stem nodes. The relatively thick flower stalk is 2 to 3 millimeters long and hairy glandular downy.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical with a double flower envelope . With a length of 10 to 14 millimeters and a diameter of 1 to 1.5 millimeters, the 15-nerved calyx is very narrow tubular and five to six times longer than the fruit stalk. The five pink petals are divided into a nail and a plate. The nail is as long as the calyx tube. The panels are in two columns. The mostly ten stamens are unequal. The two styluses are thread-shaped.

The cylindrical capsule fruit is covered by the durable calyx, which is about the same length as the capsule fruit. The black seeds are elongated, flattened-shield-shaped.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.
