The (Serednij) Werezkyj-pass (formerly also Verecke-pass or latin Porta Rusciae Ukrainian (Середній) Верецький перевал (Serednij) Werezkyj Perevalist - also Ворітський перевал Worizkyj Perevalist ; Russian (Средний) Верецкий перевал (Sredni) Werezki Perevalist ; Hungarian Vereckei- hágó , also Vereckei-szoros ) is a strategically important mountain pass in Carpathian Ukraine near the village of Schupany north of the Wolowez settlement .
The 841 m high pass played an important role in the history of Hungary . According to legend, in 895 the majority of the Magyars under Árpád advanced over the pass into the Carpathian Basin when they took their land . In this context it is also known as the “Magyar Way”. The Mongol invasion also took place in 1241 over the Werezkyj Pass; the main Mongol army, which fell over the pass, then defeated the Hungarians in the battle of Muhi .
During the First World War, Russian troops made their breakthrough with heavy losses in 1914, before being repulsed by Austro-Hungarian and German troops on January 30, 1915. During the Second World War , Red Army troops advanced over the pass to Hungary in 1944.
In the 1980s, a new route was laid about five kilometers further west for road traffic. Today's Ukrainian trunk road M 06 between Munkatsch and Lemberg no longer leads over this pass.
Trivia
In his book Best Opportunity to Die , the soldier Dominik Richert also comes through the Carpathian Mountains. He vividly describes the poverty of the area. When he comes to the Verecke pass, he cannot refrain from playing on words:
“The village was called Verecky. One soldier said: 'Damn it, that's still the question!' We marched on and soon reached another, just as poor, village. The name was on a board: 'So Verecky.' Now the soldier said: 'Is there no more salvation for us? There it says: So I die. '"
