Verena Gassner

Verena Gassner (born July 2, 1956 in Vienna ) is an Austrian classical archaeologist .

Life

From 1962 to 1965 she attended elementary school in Grinzing and from 1966 to 1974 the 1st BG XIX in Vienna (modern language branch). From 1974 to 1982 she completed a doctoral degree in Classical Archeology and Classical Philology at the University of Vienna , where she did her doctorate with Hermann Vetters . From 1982 to 1991 she was employed at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Limes Commission or its successor institutions) for the Carnuntum -Mühläcker project. In 1991 she was secretary at the Limes Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 1991 she took part in the excavations in Elea . From 1992 to 1996 she was employed as a half-day contract assistant at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the university. From 1997 to 2002 she was in charge of the excavation in Velia and independently the excavations on the city walls. From 1996 to 2001 she worked full-time as a university assistant at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna. From March 2000 she heads the Carnuntum Canabae Research group at the Institute for Ancient Cultural History at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 2002 she took over the management of the excavation in Velia, concentrating her research on the central ridge of the city (fortifications, sanctuaries). The research is financed by two FWF projects and a consulence agreement with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici delle Province Salerno, Benevento e Avellino in preparation for the expansion of the Parco Archeologico di Velia. After her habilitation in 2001 for the subject of Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna, she taught as a visiting professor in Graz in the 2004/2005 winter semester . From 2008 to 2010 she participated in the FWF- funded project to create the internet database Facem (Fabrics in the Central Mediterranean) in cooperation with CHC Salzburg (realization) and Roald Docter , University of Ghent (Punic archeology, Carthage). In 2008 she took part in the Apollonia (Albania) project of the National Institute Tirana ( Bashkim Lahi ) in cooperation with the German Archaeological Institute Rome ( Henner von Hesberg and Manuel Fiedler ). In 2010 she took part in a survey by Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi ( Christine Özgan ) in Kolophon (preparatory campaign). From 2011 to 2013 she worked on the FWF project P 23257 - G21 The Sanctuaries of the Late Archaic and Classical Period in Velia: From the Acropolis to the Zeus Terrace . From 2010 to 2013 she worked on the FWF project P 22903 G02 Cult and rituals in the sanctuary of Iuppiter Heliopolitanus at Carnuntum (carried out at the ÖAW's IKant).

Thematic focus is on the exploration of sanctuaries (Velia, the sanctuary of Iuppiter Heliopolitanus in Carnuntum, rock crevice temple in Ephesus), urban issues relating to the development of cities and settlements (Velia, Colophon, Carnuntum), the problem of cultural contacts and acculturation and economic archeology, especially in Connection with ceramic research as well as research into Roman villas (Noricum).
