The Vermilion River is a 95 km long tributary of Lake Erie on its south bank in the northern US state of Ohio . The river drains 694 km² of predominantly agricultural land that lies in the catchment area of Lake Erie. The name Vermilion means vermilion and refers to the reddish brown color of the river during floods, which comes from the reddish colored clay on the river.

The Vermilion River rises in Mud Lake near the village of Baily Lakes in Ashland County and follows a general north course through the Counties of Huron , Lorain and Erie , to its confluence with the city of Vermilion in Lake Erie. A few kilometers earlier, the river passes a deep gorge. The main tributaries of the Vermilion River are the Southwest Branch Vermilion River , which flows 1 km south of Fitchville, the East Branch Vermilion River and the East Fork Vermilion River , which flow south of Wakeman and Birmingham.

Around 73% of the catchment area is used for agriculture, followed by forest land with 26.3%. The remaining 1.9% consists of wetlands, bodies of water and urbanized terrain.

The United States Board on Geographic Names gave the river its official name in 1899. According to the Geographic Names Information System , the Vermilion River was also previously referred to as Oulame Thepy , Vermillion River, and River en Grys .
