Viktor Barvitius was a representative of realistic painting in Bohemia, similar to Soběslav Pinkas and Karel Purkyně . Starting with history painting, he came up with realistic images of contemporary society that were no longer committed to literary composition but to capturing the moment. His academic genre painting also changed to a more relaxed and colorful style of painting.
