from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viktor Lebrecht von Trew (also: Viktor Lebrecht von Treu ; * 1730 in Stade ; † 1803 ) was a Hanoverian officer , lieutenant general and initiator of the Hanover artillery school . His attempts with tubes of different lengths preceded the reduction of the weights of Hanoverian cannons .

Life

Viktor Lebrecht von Trew was born in Stade in 1730 at the time of the Electorate of Hanover .

After initial military training in the Hanoverian army , von Trew was first appointed lieutenant colonel of the artillery on March 9, 1781 and was transferred as such from Harburg to Hanover . In the same year von Trew suggested the establishment of the Hanoverian Artillery School, which he managed to persuade Gerhard von Scharnhorst to switch from cavalry to artillery. However, the relationship with von Scharnhorst, with whom he also corresponded in writing, was “not without problems”, as von Trew preferred individual officers.

In the following year, 1782, von Trew received approval to set up the artillery school, which began operations in September of the same year.

In 1784 von Trew was made a colonel . In the following year 1785 he carried out various attempts to reduce the weight of Hanoverian cannons.

In 1789, Trew was promoted to the rank of major general . Under the direction of von Trew, the regiment received reformulated service regulations in 1792 and, from 1793, mounted artillery .

Also from 1793 and until 1795 von Trew commanded the artillery of the Electorate of Hanover Field Corps .

From 1796 to 1801 von Trew commanded the artillery of the Hanoverian corps in the observation army in Westphalia . During this time he was promoted to lieutenant general in 1798 .

Von Trew had joined the commission for the reorganization of the artillery and designed a new type of howitzer for this purpose .

Viktor Lebrecht von Trew married Eleonore Christa von Ahrenhold (1743-1819).
