Viktor Paul Mohn (born November 17, 1842 in Meißen ; † February 17, 1911 in Berlin ) was a German landscape painter, draftsman and illustrator of the late Romantic period .

Life

Paul Mohn was born in Meißen in 1842 as the son of the council builder Johann August Mohn († 1866). He had his first drawing lessons with the porcelain painters Eduard Naumann and Friedrich Wilhelm Schlechte. Between 1858 and 1861 he studied at the Art Academy in Dresden. From 1861 to 1866 he was the last student of Adrian Ludwig Richter in his studio. Richter undertook a study trip to northern Bohemia in 1861 with his students Paul Mohn, Albert Venus and Karl Wilhelm Müller (1839–1904). In 1866/67 he went to Italy with Albert Venus. In 1868/69 he was again in Italy thanks to the Grand Saxon State Scholarship that he had received for his painting Campagna di Roma . The companion was again Venus, who had also received this scholarship. Here he met u in the German painters' colony. a. to Friedrich Geselschap , Anton von Werner , Ascan Lutteroth and Edmund Kanoldt .

Back in Dresden, Mohn became a lecturer and deputy judge in the academy's landscape class in 1869. In 1873 he married Margarethe Gaber (1853–1928), a granddaughter of Richter. In 1875 he took over Richter’s master’s workshop as deputy director. In 1880 he was appointed professor at the Dresden Art Academy . In 1883 he moved to Berlin, where he became professor at the Royal Art School from 1895 and was appointed director of the same in 1905. This appointment was also associated with joining the Senate of the Berlin Academy of the Arts . In addition, he was acting director of the teaching establishment of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin in 1905/06 . In 1910 he was appointed a member of the Prussian State Art Commission.

His oeuvre included numerous landscape motifs from his Saxon homeland, Switzerland and Italy. From the end of the 1870s he also worked as an illustrator of children's and youth literature.

Viktor Paul Mohn died in Berlin in 1911 at the age of 68 and was buried in the Dahlem cemetery. The grave has not been preserved.
