Viktor Ritter von Kraus (also Victor , born November 2, 1845 in Prague , † November 3, 1905 in Vienna ) was an Austrian historian , educator and politician .

Life

Kraus was the son of General Doctor Felix von Kraus . From 1863 he studied geography and history at the University of Vienna . During his studies he became a member of the Vienna Burschenschaft Silesia in 1863 and was one of the founders of the Vienna Burschenschaft Braune Arminia in 1865 ; In 1884 he became an honorary boy of the Arminia fraternity in Graz . From 1865 to 1867 he was a full member of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research (IföG). Before he passed the teaching examination in 1868, he studied at the University of Berlin with Theodor Mommsen, among others . In 1869 he was finally promoted to Dr. phil. PhD .

Kraus became professor of geography and history in 1870 and was director of the 1st girls' high school in Vienna from 1901 to 1905 . Also in 1870 he was one of the participants in the Franco-German War . In 1880 he founded the German School Association with like-minded people in which he was initially deputy chairman and advisor for Bohemia. In 1905 he was elected chairman. He saw the preservation of cultural values ​​as one of the most important tasks of the association and was the founder of various school association kindergartens and schools. In addition, Kraus was seen as a promoter of youth gymnastics and the so-called free schools , i.e. schools without religious affiliation.

From 1863 to 1897 Kraus was also a deputy of the Steiermark the Imperial Council . At first he was a member of the Progress Club and later became a German national.

He was buried in the Central Cemetery in Vienna .
