post Office
In the mid-19th century, a postal service was set up in Val d'Anniviers to overcome its geographical isolation. At that time, a wooden building in the village of Vissoie served as a mailbox. When a fire destroyed this depot in 1890, the post office was initially moved to a building on Kirchplatz and in 1907 it was housed on the ground floor of the telephone exchange. In 1922, a new post office was opened on the Place de la Tour on the ground floor of the apartment of Émilie Crettaz, the postmaster at the time. Despite the central location, the traffic obstructions there make another relocation necessary. After more than three decades of waiting and discussions with the PTT General Directorate , the new PTT building was erected and inaugurated on a plot of land belonging to the parish of Vissoie in October 1954. In the same month, a new automatic switchboard will also be opened there. Until 1986, the apartment on the upper floor of the post office was rented to the Crettaz family, who from 1918 had run the post office in Vissoie for several generations. Since then it has served as a private holiday home. The post office continues to exist and Vissoie is one of the highest year-round inhabited villages in Switzerland.
