Vital João Geraldo Wilderink OCarm (born November 30, 1931 in Deventer , Netherlands , † June 11, 2014 in Lídice (Rio Claro) , Brazil ) was a Dutch religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Itaguaí .

Life

Vital João Geraldo Wilderink joined the Congregation of the Carmelites at. On January 22, 1952, he made the simple and on January 30, 1955 the perpetual vows . After studying philosophy in São Paulo (1952–1954) and Catholic theology in Rome (1954–1958), he was ordained a priest on July 7, 1957 in Rome . He completed a doctorate at the Angelicum in Rome (1958–1960), where he received his doctorate theologiae .

He was professor of theology at the International College of the Carmelite Order and the Teresianum in Rome (1963-1965). He was the director of the Promotion of Religious Life Department of the Religious Conference of Brazil.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 5, 1978 auxiliary bishop in Barra do Piraí-Volta Redonda and titular bishop of Iunca in Byzacena . The bishop of Barra do Piraí-Volta Redonda, Waldyr Calheiros Novaes de Novais , ordained him episcopal on August 13 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Adriano Mandarino Hypólito OFM , Bishop of Nova Iguaçu , and Mário Teixeira Gurgel SDS , Bishop of Itabira . His episcopal motto was Testificari Evangelio Gratiae Dei (Witness of the Gospel by the grace of God). From 1978 to 1980 he was Episcopal Vicar of Angra dos Reis and Itaguai.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on April 21, 1980 as the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Itaguaí . He was President of the Land Pastoral Commission (CPT) for the Rio de Janeiro Region. From 1991 to 1994 he was a member of the Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB) and a member of the Commission for Pastoral Care and Biblical Catechesis. He was also a member of the Department of Catechesis in the Latin American Bishops' Council.

On July 8, 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation because of health reasons. He died on June 11, 2014 as a result of a car accident.
