Vito Tongiani
Vito Tongiani (born March 29, 1940 in Matteria ) is an Italian sculptor and painter .
Life
Vito Tongiani was born on March 29, 1940 in Matteria , now part of the municipality of Hrpelje-Kozina , in the former Italian province of Fiume . His parents came from the Tuscan province of Massa-Carrara , but had settled in Istria before World War II . In 1940 the family moved back to Massa and a short time later to the Ligurian city of Rapallo , where Tongiani grew up and spent his youth until he was 20. Later, as a creative artist, Tongiani lived and worked in Paris , Turin , Massa and Marrakech . He has been living in Camaiore for many years . Nevertheless, since 2010 he has been regularly spending a few months in Morocco , especially during the winter months , where he primarily devotes himself to painting. Tongiani became internationally known for his sculptures of Italian and international personalities that he created and displayed in public spaces, as well as the design of fountains. Probably the most famous statue of Tongiani is the monument to Giacomo Puccini in the city of Lucca on the Piazza Cittadella in front of the composer's birthplace. Since the statue was erected in 1994, Vito Tongiani has repeatedly advocated the renaming of Piazza Cittadella to "Piazza Puccini", most recently in autumn 2019 on the occasion of a ceremony for the erection of the Puccini statue 25 years earlier. So far, however, Tongiani's request has not been successful.
